The First Letter Key is simply the first letter of every word (usually in the form of a card or booklet).

The text

I am the vine;
y
ou are the branches

made into a First Letter Key would become

Iatv; yatb.

This simple device is a great help in memorizing the Scripture. It provides a useful “prompting” step between not knowing the material (having to read it off the page) and having it completely memorized.

  1. 1.Using a card like the example to the left, spend 10 - 15 to get the passage familiar enough that you can repeat it off the First Letter Key at the top.

  2. 2.Carry the card around in your shirt pocket, purse, etc., for a week or so. Use odds and ends of available time to repeat the passage using only the First Letter Key (checking the text below if you are stuck or unsure). In a few days, the passage can be recited without using any help at all.

  3. 3.Use the first letter key for periodic review of memorized passages (step 3).

I cover my cards with clear contact paper so they are durable and waterproof. (Plus, I am never without a coaster!)

And don’t forget the suggestions
on the Memorize page.
